Turnkey PBX: Concerned About Security? 3 Helpful Tips

March 7, 2014

Turnkey PBXAlthough the security of a business has always been given a lot of attention, these days require more security precautions than ever before. Because there are so many technological devices currently available that have the ability to ‘talk’ to each other, it can be difficult for a business to keep up with everything they need to do in order to make sure that their business’ communication system isn’t hacked. And although the internet has brought us numerous benefits, with some we feel that we can’t live without, it also brings with it the option for people to hack into a business’ system so they can steal their information.

This makes it a really good idea for every business owner to learn about some of the more simple security precautions they can take in order to make sure that their PBX system isn’t hacked into.

Security

Security is a real issue these days and should never be taken lightly. As soon as a new technological advance is released to the public, there’s going to be people out there who are going to make it their mission to abuse these advances. That’s why it’s necessary for every business owner to take action and do whatever they can in order to decrease their chances of someone hacking into their business.

So what are some of the things hackers doing? They’re learning how to get into a business’s PBX system so they can make long distance telephone calls at the business’s expense. And there’s even a few ways that they can go about doing this.  One of the ways includes a hacker calling a company and asking to be connected to a certain number and then asking to get transferred back to the operator. The operator sees this as an internal telephone call and accordingly may help the person dial a long distance phone number. Another way includes getting access through a maintenance port. Once they gain access here, they may be able to reconfigure the system, allowing them to make illegal long-distance telephone calls.

The following are three things a business owner can do that can help them protect their business from those who are trying to steal their information.

1. Update Software. Make sure your software is always current. Updating your software is always a good idea because revisions are always being made to the software in order to make it safer.

2. New Passwords. It’s highly suggested to update your passwords at least 2 to 4 times every year. And make sure any default passwords are reset, too.

3.  Contact Your PBX Supplier. Contacting your PBX supplier is a great idea because they should be on top of any and all updates that can help protect a business from being hacked.

Every new technology is going to come with its own set of security issues and that’s why it’s a good idea to understand what some of these issues are before signing up for any new technology. The last thing a business owner wants to do is not sign up for a new technology because they’re afraid that someone might hack into their business and steal their information. The best thing any business owner can do is to educate themselves so that they’re able to understand how hackers work, which will help them protect their business.
